Since function-testing of this carbine before buying is very simple and spare parts are still available, I would rate it as a diamond in the rough. For a budget carbine with iron sights, that’s pretty impressive! My friend who owns this particular rifle has had it since he was eight years old back in the 1960s, and the gun just keeps on working with minimal care. With the rifle rested on a sandbag, five-shot groups all looked like the picture below. Since 22 Short ammunition was cheaper than 22LR back then and also substantially quieter, many of these rifles have rather gunked-up chambers but substantial chamber erosion is unlikely. Research on this gun was hindered due to a lack of a serial number but seems to have been manufactured between 19, prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Although I had to order replacements for two parts beyond repair, the gun was a shooter. It was in fair shape, very dirty with a few dings and dents, but all of the parts were accounted for. The plain Walnut stock and forearm have no cracks or repairs, a few marks and dings, but still a good. Barrel and mag tube bluing and receiver black all look really good at between 85-90. V notch rear sight, stepped wedge adjustable for elevation. The Ithaca Model 49 22 caliber lever-action rifle is an extremely popular little gun and they are fairly rare in 22 mag. Rifle does appear to be unfired, does have bluing loss on both sides of front barrel band (see photos). Early production with 6 digit serial number.
